Planning for a Photo Shoot

September 1, 2024

Yesterday when I positioned my high school senior in front of the prop on a plane he had just soloed in I realized how much I enjoy blending the interests of the client and the photo being a senior, family, business, or headshot photo.

Right now it's cloudy and not as hot as it can be so maybe fall is nearby. I enjoy the changing of the seasons especially summer to fall. Business leading up to Christmas is always brisk with portrait sessions.
Here are some color and outfit suggestions that generally look great on camera:
Colors:
Solid Colors: Solid colors tend to work best because they avoid distractions and keep the focus on you. Classic choices include:
Jewel Tones: Emerald green, sapphire blue, and ruby red.
Pastels: Soft pink, mint green, and lavender create a gentle, flattering look.
Neutrals: Black, white, gray, and beige can be very chic and versatile.
Avoid Busy Patterns: Patterns can be distracting and may not translate well on camera.
Outfit Options:
Classic and Timeless: Think of tailored pieces like a well-fitted blazer or a simple dress.
For Women: A fitted dress or blouse with tailored pants/skirts. Pair with minimalistic jewelry.
For Men: A button-down shirt with a blazer or a simple sweater with chinos.
Comfort: Wear something you feel comfortable and confident in.
Additional Tips:
Coordinate with the Background: If you know what the backdrop will be, choose colors that either complement or contrast nicely with it.
