A new year has begun, and our customers are still booking business, family, newborn/child, and senior portraits. Many companies analyze their practices and publications during this time and make many decisions they will live with the rest of the year. We have had a recent increase in our newborn business and changed a few policies to address some issues particular to that type of session. Newborns are the only subject you hope to sleep through the session; they are so cute when asleep. We have extended the session length to two hours, allowing time for feeding, dressing, and calming down.
Several clients have scheduled location portrait sessions at their places of business. This cost is more but is more efficient for high-dollar executives. This type of session allows the subject to be photographed in familiar surroundings that many find comforting. We bring everything we need, lights, backgrounds, and an iPad for immediate viewing.
Locations sessions used to present the problem of transporting all my gear into the business. After three or four trips, I was already exhausted, and I had just gotten started. During one of these trips, a company offered me the use of their wagon. My wife calls it my beach buggy; however, it has never been to the beach, but it does allow me to haul all my equipment into the establishment with little effort. We prefer to make a small number of portraits and then let the client pick out what they want.
